Cheers for Yngve Ekström – 100 years old!

June 14, 2013

Our master and founder Yngve Ekström would have been 100 on 16 June 2013, if he had lived. Though one can say that he is still alive: Yngve Ekström's furniture is more contemporary and modern than ever, both in Sweden and internationally.

Take, for example, the beautiful and comfortable easy chair Lamino, selected as the furniture of the century, which recently resigned supreme in a Selfridges' shop window in London and is still Swedese's most sold item. Where does the Nobel prizewinner Tomas Tranströmer sit when he is interviewed about his poetry? A Lamino naturally!

And the company Swedese, which Yngve Ekström founded and managed for 30 years or so with his brother Jerker is truly flourishing. In 2013 Swedese is expanding, profit-making and a front runner within design development, both prize-winning and internationally well-known and respected.

Yngve Ekström was one of the Scandinavian architects/furniture designers whose style became world famous under the epithet of "Scandinavian Modern". He was born in Hagafors in Småland on 16 June 1913 as the second son. His father Oskar made Windsor chairs in the local chair factory and his mother Sigrid had a type of café in their home after their father died while the boys were still small. Yngve worked in a furniture factory from the age of 13, but continued to improve his skills for very many years. Initially he took evening classes after work, then took extra-mural courses in painting and drawing, and also through the Röhsska Design Museum in Gothenburg. He became an autodidact and fascinating all-round artist, who could express himself through sculptures, textiles. photos and poetry – and then also as a manufacturer and product developer. His brother Jerker was managing director and head of production while Yngve was responsible for the colletion, image, advertising and catalogues (texts, design and photography!).

But more than anything else we remember Yngve Ekström for the beautiful furniture he created. Not only Lamino, but also the retro sofa and easy chair Accent, comfortable and attractive easy chairs such as Laminett, Primo and Rondino – and not least, the elegantly beautiful garden chair Desirée. To name but a few.

Yngve Ekström had his own profile – and that profile still holds today!

We are celebrating Yngve Ekström's jubilee throughout the year, including a relaunch of one of his pieces of furniture at the end of summer. Still a well-kept secret. Until then: we cheer all summer for Yngve Ekström!

Staffan Holm’s artistic boldness awarded!

April 24, 2013

Prizes seem to be raining down on our designers… We’re inordinately proud of our friend and close collaborator Staffan Holm, who’s been awarded the 2013 Bruno Mathsson prize. The jury particularly paid attention to Staffan’s love of wood – and not least his stool Spin for Swedese.

The Bruno Mathsson prize is one of Scandinavia's most prestigious distinction for designers, worth about €30,000 to its recipient. And we think it's both appropriate and well-deserved that Staffan Holm is receiving this prize.

As the beautiful motivation expresses it: “Staffan Holm's design enterprise incorporates characteristics such as knowledge about handcraft, material and the confidence to trust his own feelings. Similar to Bruno Mathsson he is master of his craft, has the strength to elevate ideas and the artistic boldness to extend the boundaries in order to achieve innovative, unobtrusive quality".

The jury has paid particular attention to Staffan Holm's stool Spin for Swedese, which is a bold and challenging response to Alvar Aalto's stool from 1933 – and was awarded Furniture of the Year award in 2011 by Swedish design magazine Sköna Hem.

Spin has been produced in new versions in 2012 and 2013 – at bar height, upholstered and moreover in natural varnished ash, or black or white glaze finish and also the colours yellow, pink, petroleum blue, grey and a warm reddish orange.

At the Furniture Fair in Milan in April 2013 we launched Staffan Holm's new, beautiful chair Grace – also based on his love of wood and his desire to examine the potential of the material.

Staffan Holm was born in 1977. His intense feeling for wood is due to a lifelong love of carpentry – and to the fact that he initially trained and worked as a cabinet-maker. He then took a master's degree in design at HDK/University of Gothenburg. Staffan Holm was also awarded the Nordic Design Prize in 2009 and Elle Interior prize for Furniture of the Year 2011.

The Bruno Mathsson prize is presented on May 4 by the Karin and Bruno Mathsson Foundation, whose objective is to promote research, development, teaching and training within the fields of objects and the outer and inner environment. The prize has been awarded since 1984 and has gone to designers from the entire Nordic area – and also to schools and intitutes.

Congratulations to Staffan Holm on the prize! And to the Bruno Mathsson Foundation for a wise decision!

25 editors in chief celebrate GamFratesi

April 23, 2013

At this year’s Milan Furniture Fair we premiered our broom Baffi, designed by GamFratesi. Shortly after, the editors in chief of the worldwide Elle Decoration magazines decided to award their prestigious Edida prize ”Young Designer Talent of the Year“ to our Danish-Italian friends Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi.

This year was the 11th time all the 25 editiors in chief of the worldwide ELLE Decoration issues gathered together. Including the magazines French ELLE Décoration, UK ELLE Decoration, Italian ELLE Décor and Swedish Elle Interiör, and all bringing along their individual country's ELLE design prizes. These prizes are automatically nominated for the “ELLE Deco International Design Awards", known as the Edida prize, which the editors in chief vote for. Edida is presented in 13 different categories, all publicized in a special edition of ELLE Decoration.

The winner of “Floor covering" was Claesson Koivisto Rune, who have produced a great many furniture items for us. Amongst other things, we showed their chair Röhsska and a new version of the mirror Mira at the Milan Furniture Fair.

One of the finest awards "Young Designer Talent of the Year" went, as mentioned, to GamFratesi. But now wait a minute… “young talents"? We certainly think that GamFratesi are pretty well established! Back in 2008 they designed the lovely easy chair Cartoon for us and we have followed their progress since then.

Stine Gam was born in Copenhagen in 1975 and has a master’s in furniture design from the Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark. Enrico Fratesi was born in Pesaro, Italy in 1978. He studied architecture at the University of Florence and took his master’s in industrial design at the University of Ferrara. Although the GamFratesi studio is located in Copenhagen, their objects are produced all over the world, and the couple commute constantly between both their home countries.

We naturally congratulate both GamFratesi and Claesson Koivisto Rune!

Swedish Grace in Milan

April 9, 2013

It has style, it has grace and it is comfortable to sit on – our new chair Grace, which will be world premiered at Salone Internazionale del Mobile. Yes, naturally, we are there! With a large exhibition stand, our new collection and two pieces never shown before: apart from Grace by prize-winning Staffan Holm is the broom Baffi by award winners GamFratesi (more topical than ever!)

The world's most important furniture fair takes place between 9–14 April: Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. With spring in the air and the future in sight – well, of course we are there!

On our sizeable stand in Hall 16 we are showing this year's elegant and environmentally conscious collection with new items by Nendo, Monica Förster, Broberg & Ridderstråle, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Roger Persson, Staffan Holm, Lime Studio and Christine Schwarzer.

Moreover it is the world premiere for two totally new pieces. One is a beautiful and, for its production, challenging chair by prize-winning, talented and much-in-the-news designer Staffan Holm. This is the chair Grace, which has both grace and style, and which we believe will attract a great deal of attention. “Lovely to look at, comfortable to sit on” – as our old master designer Ynge Ekström would have said.

The other one is an unexpected and remarkable product – the broom Baffi by award-winning, renowned, extremely topical Danish-Italian GamFratesi, who previously designed the easy chair Cartoon for Swedese.

Do come along to Swedese's stand D43, Padiglione 16, Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Milan 9–14 April 2013.

Take off for Milan!

February 28, 2013

As spring is truly in the air we’re just about to be all set for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. In our large stand in Hall 16 we’re exhibiting 2013’s collection – and it will also be world premieres for a beautiful chair from our talented friend Staffan Holm and a surprising product by GamFratesi.

As the evenings are lengthening, the days getting warmer and nature is slowly turning green, we are working flat-out to put the finishing touches to new products and the catalogues for this spring's major happening: the Furniture Fair in Milan.

From 9–14 April we proudly present this year's beautiful, elegant and environmentally friendly collection in Hall 16 at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. This year we are showing new products by Nendo, Monica Förster, Broberg & Ridderstråle, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Roger Persson, Staffan Holm, Lime Studio and Christine Schwarzer.

In addition to the above is a world premiere for two totally new items. One is an unexpected and surprising product by the Italian-Danish design duo Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi, who have previously designed our easy chair Cartoon. The other is a beautiful and production-wise challenging chair by Staffan Holm. Both products are soon ready for take-off, landing and to be shown to the world, the spring and Milan!

Welcome to Swedese's stand D43, Padiglione 16, Salone internazionale del Mobile, Milan, 9–14 April 2013.

World Première!

February 5, 2013

The 2013 collection is elegant, comfortable, environmentally friendly, organic, practical and innovative. It includes several tables (in wood and copper), two easy chairs (one light and one curving), a chair (already specially chosen), a stool (with sheepskin), a mirror (wall-hung) and a coat hanger (by Nendo!).

Innovation is not always what you think it is. It can be something you've never seen before, or something you already know – improved, developed and refined. Designed sixty years ago, or last month, this is what characterises the Swedese collection. This is what we believe to be the future; making comfort even more comfortable, beauty even more beautiful and sparkling even more sparkly. Furniture and items that are gentle to your eyes, hand, body and planet. To be continued!

New to 2013's collection are:

Ski – Nendo
The Japanese design studio Nendo (with Oki Sato at the helm) is the design firmament's brightest star right now – and also the Stockholm Furniture Fair's guest of honor. For Swedese, Nendo has designed the coat hanger Ski, inspired by ski poles and with a unique expression and a future classic!

Norma – Roger Persson
New, organically curved swivel chair with superb comfort and an international, timeless design by Swedese's best-selling contemporary designer. The chair back can be tilted backwards with an elegant metal lever. The armchair is exhibited with this year's theme – our swivel base in recycled, die-cast aluminium. The chair is upholstered in fabric or leather.

Kite – Broberg & Ridderstråle
A delicate expression and named after kite-surfers' kites. The prize-winning and much acclaimed Broberg & Ridderstråle's new armchair has an ingenious construction in its simple design: a black or light-grey net, stretched over a steel frame. The basic design can be upgraded with armrests, neck cushion, upholstered seat and back. Kite also balances
on a 5-star base in recycled, die-cast aluminium.

Breeze – Monica Förster
She creates original and beautiful furniture that captivates a whole world. Now Monica Förster's unforgettable table Breeze is available in copper
– and it is even more beautful. Breeze is available in two sizes – one table
is high and small and the other is low and large.

Röhsska – Claesson Koivisto Rune
A new chair from Sweden's most internationally well-known design stars
– who already figure in the permanent collection at Sweden's only design museum, Röhsska, in Gothenburg. The chair Röhsska is made entirely of oak, and with upholstered seat in fabric and leather.

Flower – Christine Schwarzer
The flower-shaped table is one of Swedese's modern icons. Now we're introducing Flower in the size that has been lacking, a medium-sized table complements the small and large ones. Flower has an oak, birch or walnut border and Flower Mono is monochrome.

Mira Wall – Claesson Koivisto Rune
The beautiful free-standing mirror Mira now acquires an equally attractive wall-mounted sister!

Lime – Lime Studio
The Spanish design duo's distinct table is even more elegant now with a table top in oak.

Rondo
A round table with a table top in oak or white laminat in two heights and several different sizes. The table rests on our environmentally friendly base in recycled aluminium.

Spin – Staffan Holm
The stool that won the Furniture of the Year award is a modern, radical and innovative response to Aalto's classics. Spin has been bought by the Victoria & Albert Museum and is now shown with a sheepskin seat. Available as a bar stool and as a stackable stool.

Psst… Nendo is designing for Swedese

January 29, 2013

From 5–9 February we are showing our new, elegant collection for 2013 at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. This year’s guests of honour are our friends Nendo, who, led by Mr. Oki Sato, have created both the exhibition in the entrance hall and a special piece of furniture for us.

The new furniture for 2013 is here, and, as always, we are exhibiting it for the first time at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. Our new collection is furniture designed by both Swedish and international designers. Common to all the furniture is not only the beautiful shapes that are pleasing to both the body and eye, nor the high quality and meticulous craftsmanship. Our new collection reflects our view of the future, both regarding design companies like us – and our whole planet.

The guest of honour at the Stockholm Furniture Fair is the Japanese design studio Nendo, perhaps the greatest name in the international design world right now. And with their chief designer Oki Sato at the helm, Nendo has designed this year's exhibition: a lounge of snow-capped mountain tops greet the visitors at the fair's entrance hall. The most important part of this exhibition is not only its visual effect, but also the method of its creative process, that we are always interested in as well.

And this is actually still a secret, but if you keep it to yourself we can reveal that Nendo and Oki Sato have continued the theme of snow with their furniture Ski, exclusively designed for Swedese. What sort of furniture is it? And what does it look like? Here is a picture of a detail – do come along to view and feel the rest of this furniture and our new collection on our stand A16:30.
(Psst… another secret: we have the best coffee at the fair.)

“With a sustained and consistent design ambition, this company stands out as a brilliant example of Swedish design at its best“ read Svensk Form’s managing director Ewa Kumlin when the ”Furniture Parliament“ selected the Furniture Company of the Year 2013 – Swedese!

The year has only just begun and Swedese has already been awarded a very prestigious and honourable prize: Sweden's Furniture Parliament has appointed Swedese the furniture company of the year. The prize was received by Swedese's CEO Peter Jiseborn from no other than Svensk Form's managing director Ewa Kumlin, who read the following motivation:

“Often noted for its innovative stand and originality within product design, this company has managed to create a number of classics. One of them is a tree which possibly symbolises the company's affinity and love of wood as a material. During the year the company has won its seemingly most prestigious battle, that of a classic's uniqueness and indisputable design eminence. With a substained and consistent design ambition, this company stand out as a brilliant example of Swedish design at its best."

We are so proud and happy!

Reigning supreme in London!

January 21, 2013

Right now the world’s best department store, Selfridges, has our easy chair Lamino reigning supreme in its shop window! And now news reaches us that the V&A has purchased our Spin stool and that the most beautiful school, south of London, are redecorating with our Nova sofa!

If you are in London right now, go to Selfridges, and see our easy chair Lamino with its footsool in pride of place alone in one of the shop windows! The department store with the bright-yellow bags is probably the finest in the world, and Skandium that sells our furniture has its own 180-square-metres premises here. Right now Selfridges is running a campaign called No Noise, which has a fun story attached to it: The store was founded in 1909 by the American Harry Gordon Selfridge. He is portrayed in the TV series Mr Selfridge, a Downton Abbey with cash registers, which have been sold to 100 countries, and was a store which introduced many new things. One of his ideas, was a "Silence Room" where gentlemen could wait in peace and quiet while their ladies shopped. The new owners of Selfridges have looked at the founder's ideas, and realised that silence is a commodity that is lacking in our day and age. So a modern Silence Room has been introduced where both ladies and gentlemen are welcome. The shop windows continue the same theme, with Lamino representing "rest". A silent library has also been set up, where you can go in, borrow a book, and sit in a Lamino and read, all for free.
While all this is goin on, news reaches us that the Victoria & Albert Museum, in west London (near Skandium's head office on Brompton Road) has just purchased 14 of Staffan Holm's Spin stools for their Museum Member's room.
And little more than an hour south of London is the world's most beautifully situated school. Roedean School is a world-famous and exclusive girls' boarding school, founded in 1885, with both fictional and real celebrities amongst its former pupils. The school is situated on the coast by the English Channel, and its late 19th-century school will be furnished with Swedese's elegant, pretty, princess-like sofa and easy chair Nova. So appropriate!
See you in London!

Swedese wishes you seasonal greetings and a relaxing new year

December 19, 2012

We've always believed that furniture should be as pleasing to the body as it is to the eye… Since Swedese began making furniture in 1945 comfort has been a big issue for us. Yngve Ekström who founded Swedese and designed our classic furniture, was never satisfied until his pieces were perfect – both in appearance and comfort. His easy chair Lamino is an experience to sit in, because it has been finished off so well that it almost magically seems to fit all bodies, both tall and small.

At the beginning of the 21st century both internationally established designers and recently discovered rising stars have designed our furniture. Well-known or newcomers, young or old, we see that the designers' visions result in the best imaginable upholstery and proportions at our very own factories in Vaggeryd and Äng.

Try out our sofa Boxplay, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune – and equally comfortable to sit in as it is to lie in … yes, it's hard to get up. Here shown with the coffee table Lime by Lime Studio, on which a couple of candlesticks look good, or anything else that gives you that laid-back holiday feeling.

And while you enjoy the comfort of Boxplay we are working flat-out! Both manufacturing the furniture that has been ordered, and putting the finishing touches to the 2013's new products, that will be shown for the first time at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, 5–9 February. We can already trust you with a little secret … they will be as pleasing to the body as to the eye…

New furniture at Röhsska museum

September 3, 2012

We would like to introduce a chair that is part of the permanent collection of a museum – before it has even been shown! The chair is called Röhsska, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune, produced by Swedese, and is being sold in aid of Sweden’s only design museum.

It generally takes many years, a great number of trade fairs and a wealth of magazine and newspaper articles and awards before a piece of furniture is considered important enough to warrant a place in a museum.
But there are exceptions.
This autumn Swedese has the great honour of introducing a chair that is included in the permanent collection of a design museum – before it has even been shown.

The chair Röhsska is also the most predominant furniture item in the museum’s recently refurbished Röhsska café. The chair has been designed exclusively for Röhsska museum by the internationally renowned designer trio Claesson Koivisto Rune and is manufactured by Swedese. The chair Röhsska is part of Swedese's collection and for every chair sold we are donating 50 kronor to the Swedese Foundation, which will promote the quality and competence of the design museum.

The Röhsska museum opened to the general public in 1916 and is Sweden’s only museum for fashion, design and handicrafts. The opening of the newly renovated Röhsska café, that has also been furnished with the Swedese table Bespoke designed by Roger Persson, is a start to Röhsska’s centennial celebrations.

The chair will have a special detail, only at Röhsska, and we can reveal that this is not in any way an addition. On the contrary, here each chair will have 2 holes, placed at random, to symbolize the letter Ö in Röhsska (just like the museum’s logotype). Swedese has donated 10 signed, unique Ö-hole chairs which will be sold for 10,000 kronor each, the entire sum of which goes to the Swedese Foundation and thus forms the first contribution.

Lamino, Yngve Ekström, 1956, the original

August 16, 2012

”To have designed one good chair might not be a bad life’s work,“ said Yngve Ekström. In actual fact he created a great deal of beautiful furniture during his life, but Lamino was particularly special. So precise in its appearance and in its seating comfort that it was selected as the furniture item of the 20th century. And there is only one original.

It’s a time-consuming job to design an easy chair with such precision in its appearance and seating comfort as Lamino. Yngve Ekström created a great deal of furniture during his lifetime, but one item was particularly special. In 1999 Lamino was chosen as the furniture item of the 20th century by the readers of Sköna Hem magazine. There is only one original, and that is manufactured by Swedese – by skilful craftspeople in Vaggeryd in Småland, and from selected wood shaped into beauty and is upholstered with fabric, leather or sheepskin. Just as carefully as in Yngve’s time.

Fresh air, new ideas

August 10, 2012

The garden furniture Desirée is naturally made of material robust enough for outdoor use. But the furniture is so attractive you’ll want to use it indoors too!

The garden chair Desirée was designed by Yngve Ekström in 1954, at a time when architects wanted to obliterate the division between outside and inside. Large windows opened out houses onto the greenery, flooring from the terrace spread to the sitting room and the same kind of plants were used both in- and outdoors. Fresh air, new ideas. Later a table in three sizes was added to the chair Desirée. Together they were created of such a high standard that they can withstand an outdoor climate as well as being of such an exquisite design that they look good inside too. In a café or a lounge, or wherever you want to create a feeling that the air is clear and that summer lasts forever.

Unique copyright verdict

May 16, 2012

Eksjö district court has announced two verdicts that will have important ramifications for the entire sector. ”The verdicts show that it is worthwhile pursuing these matters,“ says Attorney at Law Eva Jensen, specialized in copyright.

The verdict in the civil case of infringement was delivered at the end of April: Buhrén Möbler was prohibited under the penalty of 500,000 SEK to manufacture, allow to be manufactured, market, offer for sale or in any other way distribute chairs similar to Lamino and its precursor Kurva. At the beginning of May Buhrén Möbler AB paid court costs of about 430,000 SEK for the infringement case – all together about 930, 000 SEK (more than €100,000). Swedish Form’s Opinion Board has acted as expert in this case.

Lamino from 1956 is one of Sweden’s most well-known pieces of furniture. In 1999 the readers of Sköna Hem chose Lamino as the furniture of the century, in competition with Bruno Mathsson’s Pernilla and Carl Malmsten’s Lilla Åland. Kurva from 1953 is one of several early variations of Lamino. One can with good reason claim that Lamino was Yngve Ekström’s life’s work.

“Plagiarism is a form of fraud that hurts both those who have produced the product and the consumer. Major investments are required in time and cost for both the designer and the producer to produce a really good design product. For the consumer, the copy looks like a well thought-out product, but it is often of significantly lower quality when it comes to sustainability and comfort,” says Swedese’s CEO Peter Jiseborn.

Peter Jiseborn and some colleagues discovered a copy of Lamino/Kurva on Burhén’s stand at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in 2011. On 10 February 2011 Swedese made an application for a writ because of Burhén’s infringement of copyright. The very next day the county court came to a decision, ex parte (without hearing the opponent), for a provisional decision for prohibition under penalty of 500,000 kronor for Burhén Möbler to manufacture, allow to be manufactured, market, offer for sale or in any other way distribute Stilo.

Later in the spring Burhén Möbler contested the charges and requested that Svensk Form’s Opinion Board act as experts in the case, which Swedese did not object to. On 26 September 2011 Svensk Form’s Opinion Board gave their verdict in the matter – that Lamino and Kurva are both thresholds of originality, each one is protected by copyright law and that Stilo is infringing this protection.
“Both verdicts show that the system works and that it moreover can work quickly,” says Eva Jensen. “It is also important that Swedese received compensation for their court costs, as a lawsuit of this type, that demands special knowledge, is extremely costly for a small producer or an individual designer. This verdict will mean that many more people will dare to bring plagiarists to court.”

Stilo was marketed by Dan Burhén Möbler, which is owned by Dan Burhén, and was manufactured in Poland by Burhén Meble, owned by Dan Burhén’s father Folke Burhén and another person. Burhéns therefore maintained that Polish laws on copyright should apply.“The verdict shows that companies cannot organise their own business as the adversary did with the aim of circumventing a penalty prohibition. This is also of great importance,” explains Eva Jensen.

The matter is not just extremely topical in Sweden but also, for example, in Britain. The magazine ELLE Decoration started a campaign two weeks ago targeted at buying copies – and to strengthen the rights of the design by changing the law. In many EU countries, a furniture item is protected 70 years after the death of its inventor, while in Britain protection is only for 25 years after the furniture has been introduced. A British change in law would be significant to many other EU countries, as Britain’s weak protection of rights makes it possible to privately import copies. However, it is forbidden to sell them, a fact most consumers are unaware of.

Larger, more colourful and more successful

February 7, 2012

Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, 17–22 April 2012. Swedese exhibited as usual at Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the Milan furniture fair, with a stand that was larger, more colourful and more successful than ever

”Milan, where else?” was this year’s proud slogan for Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, the 51st fair since 1961. And naturally every person with an interest in furniture wants to be in Milan, even though this year’s version was somewhat more subdued than usual.

Swedese moved in another direction, however, with a stand that was larger and more colourful than ever. Our new collection can be described with words such as development, refinement and precision… and for these attributes we were well-received and praised.

The new items are designed by Broberg Ridderstråle, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Staffan Holm, Lime Studio, Roger Persson and Corinna Warm.

On the very eve before the opening of the Stockholm Furniture Fair, Swedese was awarded with the prestigious “ELLE Interior Design Prize,” for the sofa Continental, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune.

On the very eve before the opening of the Stockholm Furniture Fair, Swedese was awarded with the prestigious "ELLE Interior Design Prize," for the sofa Continental, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune. The motivation stated: "A modern and cool sofa which elegantly combines soft cushions with shiny steel tubing." ELLE Interior's design prize is awarded in 13 categories to the very best within Swedish design over the past year. The selection was made by ELLE Interior's editorial office and "the winners maintain the very highest level of design, both nationally and internationally."

And as if that was not enough: the prize is also ELLE Interior's nomination to the international ELLE Deco International Design Awards, which are awarded annually in April at the Milan Furniture Fair. The editorial offices of the 28 sister magazines in the ELLE Deco network vote for the world winners.

And sssh! The Continental sofa now has a baby sister, just in time for the fair, which is an easy chair with the same name. This too, is modern and cool!

From 2 to 5

December 21, 2011

Our furniture is made to last. For a long time. That is why we have had a 24-month warranty. But then we thought…. our furniture lasts a good deal longer than that.

Long-lasting furniture is not only a matter of pride for us, but is also inherent in our environmental responsibility. So we have now extended our warranty to cover five years, that is to say 60 months!

Swedese's warranty applies to defects in the furniture material and workmanship according to the conditions below: furniture returns or complaints must be made to your retailer and accompanied by the receipt within 60 months from date of delivery.

Normal wear and tear, natural variations in wood, leather, sheepskin or other natural materials are not considered defects. Swedese is not responsible for incorrect or careless use of its furniture, inadequate maintenance or faulty assembly on the part of the purchaser – nor for direct or indirect consequences resulting from this.

Look after your furniture, and it will last you a lifetime ... or longer.

Environment, quality and social responsibility – these are the three criteria that are considered when furniture receives the certification of Möbelfakta (Furniture Facts).

Of our furniture so far, the bar stool Happy, the easy chair Happy, the armchair Happy, the easy chair Happy Swing, Gap Café modular seating, the easy chair Laminett and our classic easy chair Lamino in oiled beech or oak have all received this fine recognition.

To obtain the triangle-shaped certificate, the furniture must fulfil stringent requirements which concern everything from its function and safety to an overall environmental aspect – and ethical demands in its production. The logo is composed of three triangles, where green represents the environment, blue represents quality and orange represents social responsibility. Möbelfakta is administered by the Swedish Furniture Industry Association (TMF).

The Happy series is designed by Roger Persson. The Laminett and Lamino easy chairs are designed by Swedese's founder Yngve Ekström.

Red flag, green design

October 24, 2011

Green design is one of several themes this year at the most important furniture fair in Switzerland, the Neue Räume biennale, which takes place from 1-6 November 2011.

One special talent of Swedese is to think environmentally and amongst the products we are showing are Thomas Bernstrand's shelf Ivy, the design duo Lime Studio's table Lime and Swedish Staffan Holm's prize-winning stool Spin.

Do visit us at the ABB Eventhalle 550, Hall 2, Birchstraße 15 i Zürich-Oerlikon, Switzerland.

Swedese goes Berlin

October 17, 2011

From 26–29 October 2011 we are exhibiting at the new, exciting Qubique Trade Show in Berlin.

Qubique's aim is to be the furniture fair for the coming generation, and to show high-quality, authentic and unique products – rather than everything that already exists.

The site for the trade fair is also unique – Tempelhof Airport, known as "the mother of all airports": the historical site which played a decisive role when the Allies flew in supplies during the Berlin blockade 1948–49. The airport was closed in 2008, but is still a symbol for the future. We are honoured to have been invited and to show furniture by Marina Bautier, Thomas Bernstrand, Michaël Bihain, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Yngve Ekström, Setsu & Shinobu Ito, Lime Studio, Katrin Olina, Roger Persson and Michael Young. History and the future – please do visit us in Monter 22, Hangar 6!
