  • Designjunction, Victoria House Basement
  • Victoria&Albert Museum
  • Skandium

The annual design festival in London, 17–25 September 2011, includes exhibitions and events all over town.

One of the most important destinations is most undoubtedly Designjunction at Victoria House, 37–63 Southampton Row, Holborn underground station. Here they will showcase the very best in global design right now, including furniture by Swedese. The creative designer for the exhibition is the British designer Michael Sodeau.

From Holborn it is simple to take the dark-blue Piccadilly line to the Victoria & Albert Museum, which in connection with the design festival is celebrating that London is the creative capital of the world with a number of events: installations, special events, talks and workshops... And of course exhibitions: including one about the attractive graphic design of the London underground.

From the V&A, it is just a couple of hundred yards to the design shop Skandium at 245–249 Brompton Road, which sells Swedese furniture. For the first time ever in the UK, Skandium is holding a retrospective exhibition about our good friends, the designers Claesson Koivisto Rune. The exhibition runs from 22 September–7 November 2011.

Furniture, rugs, design

May 19, 2011

For the first time ever Claesson Koivisto Rune have shown their furniture and rugs together – in Stockholm and in Båstad.

We have something in common, Swedese and Märta Måås-Fjetterström. Both companies have a wealth of design history to rely on – and both companies look to the future. We have a tradition of excellent quality and craftsmanship and our manufacturing takes place in Sweden.
And then we have Claesson Koivisto Rune: the design and architectural trio who have astounded both Sweden and the world. They have designed pieces for both of us, which we have shown for the first time together. Furniture, rugs, design – solitary pieces that create a new totality.

Furniture, rugs, design was shown from 6–26 May at Swedese Shop+Showroom, Narvavägen 10, Stockholm.

Furniture, rugs, design continues from 1 June–14 August at Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Agardhsgatan 9, Båstad. Opening hours Monday–Saturday 10–18 and also Sundays in July and August 10–18.

Cloudless sky in Milan

April 7, 2011

Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, 12–17 April 2011.

As usual, the furniture and design industry are happily anticipating spring with an espresso and an ice-cream at an outdoor restaurant in Milan. Or perhaps with a glass of spumante...

Naturally Swedese is exhibiting at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, and this year we're showing a number of brilliant, intelligent and attractive pieces of furniture designed by Broberg & Ridderstråle, Thomas Bernstrand, Isaac Chen, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Staffan Holm, Lime Studio and Roger Persson. We're looking forward to a cloudless sky - certainly no clouds of ash from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökul this year!

Do come and visit us at our stand D43 in Hall 16, 12–17 April 2011 – open every day from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.

Putting a spin on life

March 15, 2011

The magazine Sköna Hem’s prestigious prize Furniture of the year 2011 goes to Swedese’s stool Spin.

When Staffan Holm showed the prototype of his stool Spin at the Milan Furniture Fair last year, many people were irritated. Why show an "unproducable" piece of furniture?

But all honour and credit to those who don't give up. Swedese's engineers, master craftsmen and the designer decided to solve the task together. The result is the sculptural and almost unreal stool Spin. A strong and attractive, simple and basic piece of furniture that, as well as being in the spirit of the master Aalto, also conveys a problem-solution and encourages philosophic reflection. From milking stool to a symbol for the entire solar system ...

And quite rightly the magazine Sköna Hem has decided that Spin wins the Furniture of the Year 2011 – one of the most prestigious prizes in Sweden.
The jury was composed of industrial designer Björn Dahlström, Nationalmuseum's curator Cilla Robach, interior designer Shideh Shaygan and Sköna Hem's editor Dan Gordan.

The motivation was as follows: "It is light, stackable and has its own particular expression of a fascinating twirl shape on the veneer. Staffan Holm's innovative Spin opens up a conversation between contemporary design, production methods and the magic of the old masters. And puts a spin on life."

Join the party!

February 18, 2011

When biting winter means hot coffee, warm applause and ice-cold champagne.

February is the coldest month in Stockholm, but also the month when the furniture world holds parties. And we experienced so much warmth at this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair. The new collection was widely praised and ordered in abundance – and our new shelf Ivy won the Form +1 Award for the best new product. Come join the furniture fair, the prize ceremony and the party in our Shop+Showroom on Narvavägen!

Thomas Bernstrand received the Form+1 Award for his bookshelf Ivy!

Ivy is the best new product at the fair

The magazine Form handed out the Form+1 Award for the best new product at this year's Stockholm Furniture Fair. It went to Thomas Bernstrand for his bookshelf Ivy for Swedese.
This year the jury for the Form+1 Award was the German design duo Osko + Deichman, with the following motivation for the prize: "Ivy is a smart and surprising product. The fact that it can lean is not only visually playful, but also a functional bonus. It is the user who decides what sort of expression the shelf has. Ivy can be put together straight, conventionally, or totally crazily".

ELLE Interior also gave out their Design Prize 2011 at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. "The designer of the year" actually became no less than three, Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto and Ola Rune. Claesson Koivisto Rune were awarded the prize for their innovative, diverse and unique talents. They have designed a good deal of furniture for Swedese, including the table Brasilia, the new sofa Continental, the sofas Berliner and Boxplay, the mirror Mira and the tea-trolley Teatime.

  • Continental sofa
  • Happy sofa
  • Spin stool
  • Desireée café table
  • Riddle magazine hanger

This year we are introducing eight beautiful, innovative and intelligent individuals:

Ivy – an ingenious bookshelf that can be built straight – or leaning if you prefer – and then, you'll miraculously need no bookends! Design by Thomas Bernstrand.

A single Lime is a beautiful table – several together become an installation! Lime comes in two heights and four shapes: square, rectangular, wedge-shaped and an equilateral triangle. Design by Lime Studio.

Divido – a round and attractive table in two sizes, in black or white. It is also a subtle nod to Yngve Ekström's easy chair Lamino – designed by Broberg & Ridderstråle.

Continental – a generous, elegant and luxurious sofa, covered in the fabric of your choice or in leather. The frame is of chromed, black or white lacquered steel. Design: Claesson Koivisto Rune.

Happy sofa – yet another member of our much-appreciated Happy Family, designed by Roger Persson. The sofa comes with either a high or low back and is covered in fabric or leather.

Spin – the stool that is so complex it shouldn't be able to be produced. Eminently stackable and beautiful as a sculpture, in a design by Staffan Holm.

The coffee table Desirée – that complements Yngve Ekström's beautiful garden chair, designed in 1954. The table has a white lacquered steel frame and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Riddle – a magical magazine hanger which illustrates gravity with the help of string and stoppers – and turns your magazines into a pedagogical art work. Design by Isaac Chen.

Stockholm Furniture Fair 8–12 February 2011

January 22, 2011

From 8–12 February we will be premiering Swedese’s collection for 2011!

This year's new products are hiding behind the curtain: furniture designed by Broberg & Ridderstråle, Thomas Bernstrand, Isaac Chen, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Staffan Holm, Lime Studio and Roger Persson. Among the new products are both intelligent innovations and furniture that we believe can become international icons.
Guest of Honour at this year's fair is our designer Arik Levy who, amongst other things, has designed the beautiful table Beam for Swedese. Arik Levy is a dynamic industrial designer, interior and graphic designer, with many feathers in his cap. Born in Tel Aviv, working in Paris and his name is on the lips of the entire design world.

Do come and visit us – both at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, stand A23:30 and at the Swedese Shop+Showroom on Narvavägen 10, underground station Karlaplan.

The fair is open Tuesday–Friday from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. for trade visitors and on Saturday from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. for the general public. The Swedese Shop+Showroom is open as usual Monday–Friday 11.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Wednesday 9th + Thursday 10th February open until 8.00 p.m.

Best places to stay in Stockholm

Guess how the most attractive hotels are furnished?

Stockholm's most attractive hotel is furnished with Swedese!
It is high time to book your hotel for the Furniture Fair. This year the most natural choice falls on Nobis, the new hotel that fulfils the Swedish Monopoly dream of building a hotel on Norrmalmstorg. Nobis is strategically situated for those who want to shop, have a perfect cocktail bar, open day and night, and an Italian restaurant with a truffle risotto to die for.

The hotel has been designed by our friends Claesson Kovisto Rune, and there is a great deal of Swedese furniture here – including Mira, Olive, Olive wood, Noton, Boxplay, Desirée, Brasilia and Cartoon.

If the Nobis is fully booked, then we recommend Hotel Skeppsholmen. It's situated a little further from the shopping area, but that much nearer Moderna Museet, and the view over the water is breathtaking. Hotel Skeppsholmen has also been furnished by Claesson Kovisto Rune and has Olive and Olive wood from Swedese amongst its pieces.

YNGVE EKSTROM - not only the Lamino chair

March 7, 2008

This exhibition showing furniture designed by the renowned Yngve Ekstrom runs from March 7th to April 6th 2008, at Smalands Konstarkiv, Jonkopingsvagen 41 in Varnamo, Sweden.

The exhibition opens Friday March the 7th, at 18.00.

Inauguration at 18.30 by Brita-Lena Ekström and Sven Lundh.

Yngve Ekström (1913-1988) was born in Hagafors in Småland, Sweden, which happened to be where the country's oldest furniture industry was placed. He studied drawing, sculpture, painting, music and art history. With furniture virtually from his mother's milk, he started Swedese in 1945 and was leading the company right up until his death. His career coincided in time with the best part of the postwar modern movement and together with names including Alvar Aalto, Bruno Mathsson, Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjaerholm he was at the core of a generation designers who made the concept "Scandinavian Modern" famous all over the world.
The most well-known design of Yngve Ekström's extensive portfolio is the Lamino armchair from 1956, which is still manufactured and sold all over the world. In 1999 the Lamino was voted the "Twentieth Century's Best Swedish Furniture Design" by the Swedish interior magazine Sköna Hem.
Ekström's furniture have been exhibited in Amsterdam, Vienna, Berlin, Paris, Munich and Belgrade, to name a few places, and are represented in many modern permanent collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.
