Biography
Ingeniously solved problems. Thomas Bernstrand's designs are based on an idea – the idea that is so strong and obvious that the design seems to find itself. Daily products that say something about our lives in a personal and charming way ... Like the bookshelf Ivy for Swedese, a type of puzzle that eliminates the need for bookends because of the way it leans.
Thomas Bernstrand was born just outside Stockholm in 1965 and trained at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen and at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. He has run his own studio in Stockholm – Bernstrand & Co, specialising mainly with furniture design, but also ornamentation of public outdoor environments, since 1999.
Bernstrand has won several awards, including the prestigious Bruno Mathsson prize, the DIM Design Award in Valencia 2004 and the Swedish Association of Architects' Siena prize 2008. The bookshelf Ivy won the Form +1 Award, the magazine Form's prize for the best new product in 2011.
